SAP used its SAP Connect event in Las Vegas on October 6 to move its AI agents from demos into customer rollouts. The company calls the idea the "Autonomous Enterprise": agents inside SAP applications doing parts of finance, procurement and HR work, with people approving the results.

What SAP announced

Joule Work is a new AI interface for employees, built on SAP's Knowledge Graph, which maps more than 7 million data fields across SAP systems. SAP says it is "beginning its customer rollout" and is already live for 110,000 SAP employees, where the company reports a 20% productivity gain in finance, HR and procurement.

Joule Assistants are agents that carry out specific jobs inside business processes. SAP named four, each with an early customer:

Assistant Early customer
Joule Sourcing Assistant Novartis (co-developed, now in pilot)
Accounts Receivable Assistant Nestlé
Billing Assistant PwC
International Trade Assistant Early deployments cut trade classification effort by up to 50%, SAP says

SAP also announced:

  • SAP AI Agent Hub, a central inventory of the AI agents running across a company, built into SAP LeanIX.
  • SAP Pay, an entry into payments built into SAP Cloud ERP and run by Tereina, an SAP company.
  • Joule Studio access to more than 70 AI models as part of the SAP Business AI Platform.
  • Agent2Agent protocol support, so Joule can work with agents from other vendors.
  • Moody's supplier risk data built into SAP Ariba, and Ariba procurement orchestration from ORO Labs.

SAP says its AI governance setup is certified to ISO/IEC 42001, the international standard for AI management systems.

What was missing

SAP gave no prices and no general availability dates for Joule Work, the assistants, AI Agent Hub or SAP Pay. Several of the customer examples are pilots.

Why the agent inventory matters

Most large companies now run AI agents from several vendors. SAP's AI Agent Hub, Salesforce's agent tools and ServiceNow's AI Control Tower all aim to be the place where those agents are listed and governed. Picking one system of record for agents is becoming a real architecture decision.

What IT teams should do

  1. If you are on SAP Cloud ERP or S/4HANA, ask your account team for Joule Work and assistant pricing and the licensing model before business units start pilots.
  2. Check whether you already own SAP LeanIX. AI Agent Hub sits inside it.
  3. Decide which platform will keep the master list of AI agents across vendors before each vendor's tool becomes the default by accident.
